Filaments in the Microvillous Border of Intestinal Cells

چکیده
Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were perfused through the left ventricle first with balanced salt (10) to remove the blood. They were then fixed by perfusion with a mixture of 6.5 per cent glutaraldehyde and 2 per cent acrolein in a phosphate buffer (pH 7.5) (11). After 15 minutes, the duodenum was removed, fixed for an additional hour in the same aldehyde mixture, and rinsed in Veronal-acetate buffer for 15 minutes. It was then postfixed in Veronal-acetate-buffered 2 per cent osmium tetroxide (8) and embedded in Epon (6). Sections were stained with lead according to Karnovsky's method A (3) and/or uranyl acetate (17), and examined in a Siemens Elmiskop I.

The fine-structural organization of the brush border of intestinal epithelial cells.
The fine structure of the brush border of intestinal epithelial cells of the mouse has been studied with both normal sectioning and freeze-etching techniques. Freeze-etching reveals the plasma membrane of the microvilli as consisting of a continuous layer, that is split during the cleaving process, in which numerous particles, 5-9 nm in diameter, are embedded, while other particle-like structur...
متن کاملAcetylated sialic acid residues and blood group antigens localise within the epithelium in microvillous atrophy indicating internal accumulation of the glycocalyx.
BACKGROUND Microvillous atrophy, a disorder of intractable diarrhoea in infancy, is characterised by the intestinal epithelial cell abnormalities of abnormal accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positive secretory granules within the apical cytoplasm and the presence of microvillous inclusions. The identity of the PAS positive material is not known, and the aim of this paper was to furthe...
متن کاملMicrovillous atrophy Congenital enteropathy Congenital familial protracted diarrhea with enterocyte brush-border abnormalities
Microvillous inclusion disease (MVID) or microvillous atrophy is a congenital disorder of the intestinal epithelial cells that presents with persistent life-threatening watery diarrhea and is characterized by morphological enterocyte abnormalities. MVID manifests either in the first days of life (early-onset form) or in the first two months (late-onset form) of life. MVID is a very rare disorde...
متن کاملOrganization of an actin filament-membrane complex. Filament polarity and membrane attachment in the microvilli of intestinal epithelial cells
The association of actin filaments with membranes is now recognized as an important parameter in the motility of nonmuscle cells. We have investigated the organization of one of the most extensive and highly ordered actin filament-membrane complexes in nature, the brush border of intestinal epithelial cells. Through the analysis of isolated, demembranated brush borders decorated with the myosin...
متن کامل[Intestinal failure and transplantation in microvillous inclusion disease].
INTRODUCTION Microvillous inclusion disease is a rare autosomal recessive condition, characterized by severe secretory diarrhea that produces a permanent intestinal failure and dependency on parenteral nutrition. It usually begins in the neonatal period, and the only treatment at present is intestinal transplantation. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective review was conducted on 6 patients (th...
متن کاملCould Intestinal Enzyme Defi ciencies be the Cause of Your Abdominal Discomfort and Diarrhea?
The predominant cell in the small intestine is the enterocyte, a highly specialized absorptive cell. The apical or luminal side of each enterocyte consists of about 3,000 tiny microvilli. This provides another layer of minute projections inside the intestinal tube (known as the lumen) that enhance absorption of the contents of the gastrointestinal tract. The microvillous surface of the enterocy...
